![]() No Raging, no special Monk attacks, no Battle Master maneuvers, no sneak attack, no nothing. Basically none of their features will work. There are a few semi-exceptions to this I'll talk about later, but this general rule has big effects on how Polymorph changes a PC. Pick up your character sheet, set it aside, and pull up the MM or book entry for that creature because now that's you. Mental ability scores, proficiencies and skills, class and racial features, special abilities. Most important rule! Basically everything on your character sheet gets replaced by the beast's statblock. Polymorph replaces your character sheet.I hope clearing these up makes the spell feel more acceptable for more tables! I'm mostly going to focus on buffing Polymorphing (becoming a T Rex) and not debuffing Polymorphing (turning a T-Rex into a turtle), because I think this is where most of the issues come up: ![]() A lot of people in this thread have talked about counters to Polymorph or reasons why it's fair, but I really want to focus on the rules around Polymorph. I think a lot of Polymorph hate gets resolved pretty quickly once people understand all its limits and requirements. PCs and DMs routinely mess up how this spell works, partly because it's complicated and partly because some of its game effects are pretty unintuitive. Lots of this comes from misunderstandings. I love this spell! But I'll admit that Polymorph is one of those spells and game effects that draws a lot of flak. We also let you use the summon statblocks from tasha’s as an alternative statblock if you want. ![]() My group reworks polymorph by limiting CR to half your level but expanding the choices for creatures to include monstrosities, plants and other creature types if your race/class has a thematic connection to them.We have found it makes the spell much less irritating for the dm to play against without hard countering while also giving the player many more options for creativity. To me all of this is horrible design and isn’t fun for either side. By the time the party gains access to it, there are basically only two options worth considering, giant ape and t-rex. There’s also the fact that the selection of creatures for polymorph is extremely limited. So we have a spell that is stupidly strong, but can be completely shut down by the dm at basically any time. This on the other hand is balanced out by the fact that the spell can’t do magic damage. CR and level are not in any way equal measures of power. The ability to just effectively slap 100 temp hp on anyone while also turning them into an effective melee combatant is borderline broken. Not necessarily overpowered but exceedingly poorly designed in it’s current state.
